With a dedicated Panel and Workshop room throughout the weekend, Wai-con has a panel for everyone! Well, people who like going to panels anyway! Previous years panel line-ups have included cosplay how-to, photography, comics and manga, yuri and yaoi, debates, language panels, and a whole bunch more!

Hayao Miyazaki
The life and works of Miyazaki, from his first job working on Ken the Wolf Boy (1963) to Studio Ghibli.
Live Japanese Action series of 1960’s
This panel looks at the two live action Japanese series “The Samurai” and “The Phantom Agents” during the early days of Australian TV of 1960’s. These two shows opened up the networks to other Japanese offerings such as action monster films such as Godzilla & Gamera and the birth of Anime in Australia.
AMV Competitions 101
Guidelines and advice for the sourcing, encoding and submission of videos
for competitions.
AMV Basics
A discussion panel on AMV styles, software, editing and resources, with several AMV editors who will add their own perspectives to the topics at hand.
AMV Sideshow
General AMV screening showing some of the best AMVs available online including the most recent efforts from some of the worlds best editors.
The Touhou Scene
This panel will be comprised of a few panelists from various
sides of Touhou talking about how a simple game has exploded into so much more. We’ll be focusing on the games themselves, their huge impact on the Japanese doujinshi and art communities, their music contributions to various music scenes, and their entrance into the western world.
Subtitling Workshop/Q&A
Workshop covering a few parts of the subtitling process for both professional and fansub use, as well as a Q&A from a few fansubbers on why they do what they do and how it connects them to the subculture of anime in Australia.
Cosplay 101: An Introduction
Cosplay 101 provides a crash course for beginners to cosplay, from picking your character, to constructing or assembling your costume discussing things like how to read a pattern or how to style a wig, to etiquette when you’re finally wearing that costume at a con. This panel provides a stepping-stone for beginners to get into this creative and social hobby, and can also be informative
and interesting to intermediate and experienced cosplayers.

Cosplay 301: Props and Photography
Propmaking is a massive subject that quite often gets overlooked in favour of other elements of a costume, despite the fact that a great prop can only make a great outfit better. We will teach you some techniques and materials you can use to design and create masterpieces. We will also teach you (from a photographer AND cosplayer/model perspective) how to pose
for photos, do facial expressions and how to make a static image come to life, as well as how to set up a cosplay photoshoot, from finding locations, to lighting and framing, and how to make your subjects look as amazing as their costumes.
Yuri
An indepth look in Yuri anime, and its place in modern anime and manga. Also, a look into Yuri magazines and dramatic CDs.
Yaoi
An indepth look in Yaoi anime, and its place in modern anime and manga. Also, boys.
Digital Art
I’ll be giving basic tips, information and methods about creating digital art. (Anime style) It will mostly be aimed at beginners and people wanting to start drawing digitally. I plan to share techniques and methods that I’ve learned for drawing line-art, coloring and painting. I’ll also be sharing knowledge about how to use different tools and settings.
Game Dev Industry: It isn’t the end of the world!
This year has seen a unprecedented amount of industry closure across Australia
and the world, but now due to a small device in the palm of your hand, development isn’t dead. We’re going to have some talented people come and talk about what they’ve been doing to keep going in games.
Genre and Comics, good tips for starting out
We’ve spent enough time talking about comics, why not make some? We’re going to have some talented people on hand to talk about writing, drawing and just getting your work out there.
Walking the Wasteland: AnnAU’s guide to Australian Conventions
There’s many awesome conventions around Australia, so we feel it’s time to share some of our stories of which ones have been fun to attend, what is there to do and some interesting things along the way
Bootleg Basics (i.e. Pirated Goods 101)
An introduction to bootlegs/pirated goods in relation to anime/manga: what they are, why you shouldn’t support them and how to tell if an item is legitimate or not. The panel will be like an open discussion lecture in which questions and discussions among the audience is encouraged while the information is being presented. There will also be some interactive quizzes to test knowledge of bootlegs among audience members.
Asian Ball-Jointed Dolls
The panel would be a brief introduction to the Ball-Jointed Dolls hobby, including a brief history, different types of Ball-Jointed Dolls (And the anime influences that brought about the hobby) and an introduction into the different facets of the hobby.
Ask a Nation
Ask the Hetalia nations questions and dares based on past and present events (excluding some topics,e.g WW2). We also plan to hold a trivia contest based on the anime and manga towards the end of the panel.
How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Girls
A look into the current state of the Anime industry: How the main demographic for Anime (35/Male/Japan) has been shaping the industry over the past decade.
Pathfinder Society Organised Play
Short interactive demonstrations of the Pathfinder Role Playing Game. No previous experience is necessary. It will most likely interest anyone keen on dungeons & dragons, fantasy, RPGs in general, or social gaming.
Cosplay and Life
Talking about how to and the importance of balancing cosplay, working/ studying (or both) and how it is vital that a steady balance is made between all of these. The panel will include hints and tips about how to balance these aspects of life, as well as linking these with finances.
