Art

The two art contests are Quick Draw and Time. Quick Draw is pretty self-explanatory- The aim of this contest is to get your artwork and ideas out quickly within the short time limit, whereas the Time contest refers to both the theme and the longer time limit the competitors will get.

General Rules

(which apply to both Quick Draw and Time)

  1. All artwork must be completed entirely by yourself. Two people cannot enter one piece of art.
  2. No plagiarism. All ideas should be original, if your work is identified as plagiarism by the judges, it won’t be judged.
  3. You may enter both contests if you like, however you can only enter one piece of art per contest.
  4. Artwork needs to be finished before the time limit. Art finished after the time limit will not be judged.
  5. Artwork needs to adhere to the theme of the contest. Be careful not to mix the themes up.
  6. All artwork needs to be family friendly. No nudity, hentai, yaoi, yuri, violence, or other explicit or offensive themes.
  7. The judge’s decisions are final. No tantrums.
  8. Paper and pencils will be provided. If you need any other specific art materials (artlines, paint, 300gsm cartridge paper with a medium tooth, etc etc) please provide them yourself.

Judging Critera

As well as being judged on their artistic and technical merits, the artwork will also be judged on how well they convey the theme. If the art is a wondrously fantastical life drawing of a dog wearing a top hat on a rainbow, this isn’t going to win. It must stick to the theme and yet be fantastic at the same time. If your interpretation of the theme is slightly abstract, this is okay as long as you can explain your view and the judging panel agrees that your artwork is relevant enough to the theme. You MUST finish drawing before the time limit. However if you finish the art in two minutes, no additional credit will be given to you.

Quick Draw

Time Limit: 12 minutes. The way the competitors manage this time is completely up to them, I’m not going to ding any bells and move anyone along, however I would recommend that they use 2 minutes to consider the theme and their drawing, and the remaining ten minutes to actually draw the piece.

Theme: Going along with Wai-con’s theme of Angels and Demons, the artwork must contain either an angel or demon (both if you really want I guess). However to add a twist to this theme, you must choose a genre of music (for example, Jazz, Classical, Electro, Baroque, Doof Doof) and incorporate this into your drawing. How you choose to represent this is entirely up to you. Some examples of how this can be done include having your subject dancing to your music genre, embodying the music genre (eg. Doof Doof could be a Demon dressed up as a raver). But don’t let my examples stick in your brain and stifle you, by all means do something completely different. Just as long as it sticks to the theme.

Time

Time Limit: 35 minutes. Again, how the competitors want to use this time is up to them, I’m not going to section it out for them. But personally I would use 5-10 minutes considering the theme, and the remaining time getting the piece underway.

Theme: As with the Quick Draw contest, the theme for the Time contest is split into two parts. The first part is the general theme for Wai-con (angels and demons), while the second part is Time. The competitors are to pick a certain era (Jurassic, the future, WW1, etc) and integrate this into their drawing. How the competitors choose to do this is up to them.
